New genetics
20 June 2004
Terrick Merinos has the obtained the indefinite
use of 200 Caranna Merino Stud special stud ewes. These sheep
are based predominantly on Haddon
Rig – Pooginook
bloodlines and are a welcome addition to the stud.
At the recent Isis Downs dispersal sale the stud
purchased the 2003 drop ewe weaners and also acquired the 2003
drop of ram lambs. These sheep will be indexed in their own groups
as they are on a different program to the Terrick sheep.
The AI program this year will involve genetics from
Charinga
and Banavie Park.

Benchmarking in the central
test
20 June 2004
The stud continues to benchmark sires in the central
test to monitor genetic gain.
Terrick Merinos sire 98-0565 performed very well
in the Queensland sire evaluation 2000 intake conducted at Bollon
involving 11 studs and 14 rams.
Using a 3% index (increasing fleece weight - maintaining
micron) this ram was ranked first; on a 6% index (increasing fleece
weight – decreasing micron) he ranked second; and using
a 12% index (maintaining fleece weight - decreasing micron) he
ranked fourth.
The classer commented that the ram’s progeny
were consistent in body size and wool type and were very even
overall.
