Performing
genetics

Terrick Merinos' clients have produced some excellent
results in the past year.
At the Barcoo Pastoral Society wether trial shearing
in April this year, the Wood family from 'Koondoo', Blackall had
an outstanding result, winning the Supreme Pen of Wethers with
their 04 drop team. In the highest priced fleece category they
were placed first, second and third and their 05 drop teams came
second and third in that group. Congratulations to Colin, Roslyn
and the girls.
The Banks family at 'Duneira', Blackall, had an
excellent shearing last year with their un-classed two tooth ewes
cutting 7 kgs of 21 micron wool. This is an excellent result for
Dick, Annette, Paul and Kylie who have been Terrick clients for
over forty years.
Success at Newcastle
sale
19 September 2007
In February this year, Terrick Merinos sold nine
bales in Newcastle as a promotions exercise.
The wool shorn from the 05 drop or two tooth ewes
read exceptionally well at:
- 19 microns
- 3.8 standard deviation
- 66.3% yield
- 102 mm length
- 44 nkt strength
There was some very positive comment and feedback
on how the wool presented and the stud will repeat the exercise
next year. Interestingly, the rest of the 05 drop ewes still averaged
19.3 microns and had similar readings to the special line that
was taken off.
2007 AI program
19 September 2007
The lambs from the 2007 AI program at Terrick Merinos
are now three months old.
Following some very pleasing results from the 2006
AI program, the stud decided to use Nerstane 43 again. This ram’s
progeny have heavy cutting, low micron, stylish wools and are
looking to add positively to the stud’s genetic pool.
Pooginook Boxer was also used in this year’s
AI program and at this stage his lambs look very pleasing. This
ram is ranked in the top 25 in the Central Test on two indexes
and he has great attributes across all traits.
Terrick Merinos continues to source outside genetics
to enhance its genetic base, and also to benchmark its position
in the industry. All indications are that Terrick Merinos genetics
are performing very highly and continuing to improve.
Longreach Sire Evaluation
19 September 2007
The Leading Sheep Project, DPI, the Australian Agricultural
College and the Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Association
have all come together to set up a Sire Evaluation site at Rosebank
near Longreach later in the year. There will be 10 separate sires
benchmarked at Rosebank, two of which will be Terrick Merinos.
This is an important step in seeing how different
genetics perform in an arid environment as all other sire evaluation
sites are in improved country. It is also a wonderful opportunity
to educate college students in some of the latest technology available
to the sheep and wool industry.
