2008 season
overview
3 September 2008
Amaroo is currently enjoying its best year since
2000. While there was some extreme rainfall in January that did
considerable infrastructure damage with some stock losses, it
was a great relief to have just had the rain.
This winter has been very cold with some very heavy
frosts but there has been two falls of rain in June and July to
offset this a little.
It is well known that there is still some very dry
country in Western Queensland and it is hoped that a break is
not too far away and everyone can enjoy a good season. The stock
are reflecting the better seasonal conditions and the stud is
having its best lambing since 2005 where paddocks are not effected
by wild dogs
This year's AI program
3 September 2008
An AI program was carried out on 20 December 2007
with 231 ewes being inseminated to four different sires.
Toland W611 was used as the outside sire and is
a very high performer in Sire Evauation an also SGA. He is an
extreme sire for staple length and is one of the link sires being
used in the Longreach Sire Evaluation. There were four sires used
from within the stud in the AI program. One being well proven
and the others to validate their individual performance.
Terrick Merinos to start
poll stud
3 September 2008
Terrick Merinos will be syphoning off 200 stud ewes
to start a Terrick Poll Merino stud. These 200 ewes will be used
in an AI program that involves the use of three high performing
poll rams from Billandri and Centre Plus Poll.
Billandri 01-0564, Billandri 01-0601and Centre Plus
107351 are the sires that will be used. View these sires respective
genetic performance on MerinoSuperiorSires.com.au
and SheepGenetics.org.au.
The principals of Terrick Merinos believe that today there is
very little genetic difference between horned and poll genetics
and that the move to easier care sheep and the pressures from
side isssues such as OH and S demand that the stud move in this
direction. While the two ewe bases will be kept well apart the
progeny will be benchmarked as a group to evaluate and compare
genetic performance.
New classer
3 September 2008
Andy Picone has accepted a role to assist with this
year's stud classing. Andy has high credentials in the industry
having jackerooed for two years at Uardry and completed the 12-month
rural business management course at Marcus Oldham Ag college.
Last year Andy won the Australian young judges competition
and was an associate judge at the Queensland State Sheep Show
in May this year.
Longreach
Sire Evaluation
3 September 2008
There is some early data that has come in from the
Longreach Sire Evaluation that is of interest. Terrick 01-0939
progeny had the second heaviest weaning weights and the barest
breach scores at that time.
The lambs from all the sires were on display at
a sire selection workshop at Rosebank on 10 July and the Terrick
sires lambs looked very even and had well nourished wools.
The whole sire evaluation is progressing well and
plans are in place for another intake this year.
Wild dogs
3 September 2008
Wild dogs have been an immense problem for the stud
over the last three years with considerable losses and reduced
lambings.
At a meeting of the Blackwater Dingo Trust it was
decided to go back to how things were done in the past when wild
dog control was very successful. All members of the trust would
supply their own meat and it would be inseminated on location
and distributed by plane and vehicle on the same day. Also all
members would put in $2000 each to go towards a professional dogger
to clean up problem dogs that would not take baits.
Don Sallway was employed as the dogger and he is
paid $500 for a grown dog and $100 for a pup. Don arrived on 30
July and in 3 weeks has caught 15 dogs in the near vicinity, six
of which were on Amaroo. There has be an immediate stop to sheep
losses and the lambing looks excellent in paddocks where the dogs
were contolled early. A promising result so far.
Rabobank EDP Program
3 September 2008
Earlier this year Rick Keogh completed the Rabobank
Executive Development Program in Sydney along with 35 other people.
The course was conducted over a week in August last year and a
final week in July this year.
Applicants have to go through a selection process
to take part and chosen participants come from all areas of agriculture.
It is a highly intensive and challenging course but extremely
rewarding in its outcomes and the many contacts that are made
with other participants and presenters.
Rick was chosen along with nine others of the group
to present an individual project. He would highly recomend this
course to anyone. Find out more. For more information go to /www.rabobank.com.au/knowledge_services/business_management_programs/executive_development_program/index.asp
Vet students
3 September 2008
In August, 50 James Cook University 3rd year vet
students visited Amaroo learn about how Terrick Merinos utilises
the quantitative genetics program. The students were taken through
the current and future directions of the the stud and property
programs and did a visual assessment of some stud sires incorporating
figures.
A great initiative by James Cook Uni. The students
also visited other sheep producers in the region.
Westech
3 September 2008
Terrick Merinos will be taking a display to the
Westech field days on 9 and 10 September. The stud will present
some of the rams that will be put up for auction at the on property
sale on 1f October. All are welcome to come and visit our stand
and view the sheep, the selection process and the future direction
of the stud.
